Two important
criteria for evaluating the health of our waterways are whether they
have enough dissolved oxygen to fully support aquatic life and whether
they fully support recreational use.
These
criteria determine whether a waterway is "impaired" according
to EPA standards.
The Murderkill
is unhealthy by these standards, with only 13 percent of its length
fully supporting aquatic life and none fully supporting primary
contact recreation.
Recreational
use is not recommended for the Murderkill's ponds either, but 86
percent of the ponds' 231 acres have enough dissolved oxygen to
fully support aquatic life.
