Brianna Barkus recently joined
us as the new seasonal project assistant for the Tributary Action
Teams. A native Delawarean, she grew up in Townsend and
currently resides in Clayton. Brianna graduated from the
University of Delaware in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in Wildlife
Conservation.
She began bringing wild animals
home as a young girl, so that she could study them or nurse them
back to health if they were ill or injured. Becoming more
skilled, she started working with a wildlife rehabilitator when
she was 15. She loves making a difference in the lives
of wild creatures, and would like everyone to be able to love
nature the way she does.
As a university sophomore,
Brianna began working at Lums Pond State Park as a seasonal naturalist,
making people more aware of the beauty that Delaware has to offer,
helping them to better appreciate and respect the natural treasures
that are all around us.
After four summers at Lums
Pond, she moved on to the Aquatic Resource Education Center,
working
with the Eco-Explorers and the Adopt-A-Wetland Program. Her
main focus at the Center was teaching children and adults about
the beauty and wonder of Delaware's wetlands.
Now Brianna is working with
the Tributary Action Teams in the Department of Watershed Assessment. She's
looking forward to the journey that lies ahead and hopes that
everyone can work together to continue making a difference in
the quality of Delaware's watersheds.
