Hurricane
Isabel Largely Spares the Appoquinimink Watershed
Fortunately
for the Appoquinimink watershed and most of the Middletown,
Odessa, and Townsend area, Hurricane Isabel left few major
problems
in its path. Other than power outages, Middletown and Odessa
escaped major damage. The heavily wooded area of Townsend
managed to escape
any major difficulties but was affected by numerous downed branches
and by power outages.
Isabel
took down a number of older trees on private and public property,
including a tree in front of Middletown Middle School.
Trees blocked some roads. Route 9 was closed in its lowest lying
areas due to flooding.
Power outages, some lasting several days, occurred throughout
the area forcing 11 people to take stay overnight at the Red Cross
shelter at Everett C. Meredith Middle School on Broad Street in
Middletown.
Because
of intermittent rainfall, Middletown’s new sewage
treatment plant did not overflow and only a few residents in low-lying
areas closer to creeks experienced flooding. Water companies
reported having no calls from customers about interrupted water
service.
Back-up generators kept the water flowing during the power
outages.
The Middletown
Transcript reported Townsend Council President Charlie Murray as saying, “As
storms go, it was pretty much of a routine storm other than having
to deal with high winds and
sideways rain.”
