Volunteers Roared in to Help
At Roaring Point Park!

On Saturday, September 25, over 50 volunteers came to Roaring Point County Park to participate in cleaning the beach and restoring the shoreline.

Volunteers gather for a group photo
Restoration volunteers of all ages planted over 180' of grasses and several trees along the beach at Roaring Point County Park.

Every fall, The Friends of the Nanticoke host a clean up at this site.  This year area residents hauled more than fifteen bags of trash from along the beautiful shoreline.

Mitch Kieler welcomes volunteers
Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Mitch Kieler welcomes volunteers and explains the project.
Beginning at noon, under the direction of Mitch Kieler from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) , volunteers from the local community and Salisbury University’s BioEnvirons Club planted hundreds of grass seedlings and numerous trees along 180 feet of Nanticoke River-front that was severely damaged during Hurricane Isobel.  In the days leading up to the planting, Wicomico County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism crews had spent countless hours installing the 20 foot long, 200 pound coconut fiber biologs that will hold the sandy cliff-side in place until the grasses can mature and take hold.
Volunteers learn how to do the plantings
Volunteers watch as Mitch  Kieler demonstrates how and where to plant the beach grasses.

The success of this project was due to the excellent working partnership between the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, DNR, Wicomico County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Friends of the Nanticoke.

Want to support this project?  Several grass species need to be planted in cooler weather.  To do this, we've tentatively scheduled the final round of plantings at Roaring Point for Saturday, November 13.  For information or to volunteer, contact Margaret Vivian by email, or give her a phone call at her office number, (410) 543-1999 x 502.
